Whether yours gets treated as sudden or gradual usually comes down to how long the evidence suggests it had been leaking, which is part of why documenting the damage the day you find it — not the day you get around to it — matters for the claim.
What actually causes the overflow?
South Florida's humidity keeps air conditioners producing condensate at a heavier volume, for more months of the year, than most of the country sees — which is part of why the drain line clogs faster here than it does in a drier climate. The algae that clogs the line feeds on exactly the moisture the system exists to remove.

A unit in an interior closet tends to stay more contained to the closet floor and the wall it backs onto, but it still wicks into the subfloor if it sits long enough before the closet door gets opened.
What does the cleanup actually involve?
If the water's been contained to a day or two, extraction and drying the affected flooring or closet wall is usually enough. If it's been running longer — which, given how these leaks start, is the more common case — the scope grows to include cutting out wet drywall or ceiling material and checking the insulation above it, because insulation that's stayed wet for weeks doesn't return to its original performance even after the water's gone.

How do you keep it from happening again?
A yearly flush of the condensate line clears years of buildup in a few minutes — a wet/dry vac at the outside termination point does most of the work. If your system doesn't have one, or you're not sure whether it does, that's worth asking whoever services the unit next.
Can I just dry it out myself with fans?
For a small, contained spot caught within a day, fans and a dehumidifier can sometimes handle it. Once the leak has been running long enough to soak insulation or wick into a subfloor, surface drying won't reach the moisture that's already inside the material, and it keeps feeding mold growth from the inside even though the surface looks dry.
Does the AC unit need to be repaired before or after the cleanup?
Both should happen close together — drying out the structure doesn't fix a clogged line or a failed float switch, and repairing the AC doesn't undo the water already inside the ceiling or wall. Leaving either one for later just gives the other problem more time to get worse.
